CAMC advances the profession through peer connection, professional development, advocacy, the promotion of best and emerging practices in municipal communications, and more. CAMC Members work in towns, cities, counties, regions, and other municipal entities of all sizes, from small rural municipalities to major urban centres, and across all areas of the country. CAMC provides a community for professionals navigating the unique demands of communicating on behalf of local government, including transparency, public engagement, council relations, crisis communications, and issues management. For more information about CAMC, visit: www.thecamc.ca Role Description: The Executive Director is CAMC’s senior operational leader, responsible for executing the strategic vision set by the Board of Directors, and ensuring the Association delivers meaningful value to its members. The ED serves as the organization’s public face, manages day-to-day operations, leads membership growth and retention, oversees programming and partnerships, and provides the foundation that allows CAMC to fulfill its mandate. This is a leadership role that requires both strategic thinking and hands-on execution. The successful candidate will be deeply familiar with the municipal communications landscape in Canada, bring credibility as a practitioner or professional services provider within the sector, and demonstrate the capacity to build and sustain a mission-driven association. Key Responsibilities Prepare agendas for Board meetings. Prepare quarterly reports for the Board on operational performance, membership, financials, and emerging issues. Drive membership growth through broad and targeted outreach to municipal communicators across Canada. Develop and execute retention strategies that increase member satisfaction and long-term affiliation. Serve as the primary relationship manager with CAMC Members. Champion equity, diversity, and inclusion in membership recruitment and programming. Monitor member needs and feedback, and translate insights into responsive programming and services. Oversee the development and delivery of CAMC's professional development offerings. Curate and develop content relevant to the evolving practice of municipal communications in Canada, through the use of channels including but not necessarily limited to newsletters, social media, and the website. Identify and pursue partnerships with aligned associations, academic institutions, and sector organizations. Maintain CAMC's position as the authoritative voice on municipal communications practice in Canada. Prepare and manage the annual operating budget in collaboration with the Treasurer and Board. Oversee financial reporting, accounts payable/receivable, and compliance with applicable regulations. Maintain organizational records, governance documentation, and compliance filings. Oversee CAMC's digital presence including website, social media, and member communications. Monitor trends in the municipal sector and communicate their relevance to CAMC's membership and programming. Qualifications Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience in communications, public affairs, or a related field. Demonstrated familiarity with the municipal sector in Canada, either as an in-house communications practitioner or external advisor. Proven track record in organizational leadership, project management, or association management. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to represent the organization with credibility and professionalism. Comfort overseeing budgets and basic financial reporting. Ability to work independently in a remote, largely self-directed environment. Proficiency with digital tools for communications, project management, and virtual collaboration. Strong understanding of good governance. Accredited in Public Relations (APR) or equivalent professional designation. Prior experience in a non-profit, professional association, or member-based organization. Experience in conference planning, professional development delivery, or content programming. Bilingual (English and French) an asset. Experience with sponsorship development or grant writing. We encourage applications from candidates who don’t meet every requirement, but whose mix of experience and vision would strengthen CAMC. Additional core competencies include: Sector Credibility: Recognized as a peer by municipal communicators, and understands the unique pressures of the profession. Relationship Builder: Builds trust with members, the Board, partners, and sponsors through consistent, authentic engagement. Governance Acumen: Understands and respects the Board-ED relationship, and operates effectively within a governance framework. Member-Centred Mindset: Decisions are rooted in what delivers real value to members and advances the profession. Strategic-Operational Balance: Can hold the “big picture,” while executing the details in a lean organization. Entrepreneurial Drive: Comfortable building and executing in a lean environment where the work has significant impact. Working Conditions & Expectations This is a remote position; the ED may be located anywhere in Canada. Regular attendance at virtual Board Meetings is required. Attendance at CAMC professional development sessions is required. Some travel across Canada may be required, depending on programming and relationship-building priorities. The role requires flexibility in scheduling, including occasional evenings for Board or member events. Submissions will be accepted via email: [email protected] Submissions will remain open until August 14, 2026, or until a suitable candidate is found. Applications should be directed to the CAMC Board of Directors. Screening interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis.
