Inherent in this role are knowledge, skills, and abilities specific to health promotion, prevention, and protection. This employee focuses on the immunization program for adults, high risk individuals and international travelers and works relatively independently. This employee is expected to make decisions based on sound assessments in accordance with The Public Health Act, the policies of the Public Health Nursing program and the Health Region, the CRNS Standards of Practice, the Canadian Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice, and other relevant legislation. This employee liaises with, and refers to, other health personnel, other sectors and community groups. The Public Health Nurse works within guidelines established by Health Region policy to plan, organize, implement and evaluate nursing programs in an assigned area, under the direction and supervision of a Public Health Nursing supervisor. Human Resources Exemption: No Experience * Experience delivering a diverse range of immunizations * Minimum of two (2) years recent relevant experience in public health nursing Education * Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) Other Education and Training * Public Health Nursing courses * International Travel Medicine course Competencies * Advanced Clinical Assessment Skills * Critical thinking skills * Risk management skills * Collaborative skills * Conflict resolution skills * Facilitation skills * Negotiation skills * Communication skills * Decision making skills Knowledge and Abilities * Ability to analyze health issues in the context of political & social climate * Ability to work collaboratively with team members and the community at large. * Willingness to adhere to established Public Health policies and procedures. * Demonstrated high degree of accuracy is required of assigned responsibility * Able to assist all levels of clients to take responsibility for their own health * High level of accuracy in health assessment, nursing diagnosis and treatment. * Demonstrates skill in group education, individual counselling and advocacy * Demonstrates flexibility by adjusting workload to accommodate client needs. * Demonstrated knowledge in media communication and social marketing. * Ability to exercise independent decision making in a community-based environment * Identifies the importance of culture on health. * Uses independent judgment based on Public Health principles. * Ability to be self-directed * Uses critical analysis, reflective practice and assessment. * Uses knowledge of determinants of health in interactions with clients. * Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing * Ability to demonstrate appropriate level of professional conduct and judgement. * Demonstrates knowledge in community development/assessment. * Demonstrates application of the nursing process * Evaluates nursing interventions in individual, group and community outcomes. * Demonstrates knowledge of multiple health promotion strategies * Knowledge of prevention used in promotion, prevention and protection of health. * Demonstrated knowledge in educational resource development.
