Job Summary: In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Utilizing theory-based practice, the Staff Nurse, Surgical Suite, VCC provides perioperative care to surgical patients. Duties/Accountabilities: 1. Provides nursing care in accordance with the Nursing Department's philosophy, conceptual framework, and standards of practice. 2. Functions as a member of the health team by: a. Identifying patient needs and consulting with members of other health care disciplines as necessary. b. Communicating patient-related information to health team members through documentation in the patient's chart and the provision of written and/or oral reports. c. Participating in interdisciplinary rounds. 3. Functions as scrub nurse/circulator/PAR nurse for operations and special procedures. 4. Admits, transfers, or discharges patients according to Agency policies and Clinic/Nursing Department directives. 5. Assists the patient in interpretation of the treatment plan and ensures patients and families are aware of services available at the Agency and in the community. 6. Maintains a safe environment for patients, families and staff by adhering to emergency procedures and safety policies and standards. 7. Accepts accountability for nursing care. Determines own learning needs and meets these needs in collaboration with the Manager and other clinical resource staff. 8. Assumes primary responsibility for maintaining knowledge of current nursing practice. 9. Participates in educational activities and programs for patients, staff (e.g. orientation) and nursing students as approved. 10. As required, provides work direction to non-professional staff by delegating tasks during shift, monitoring work to ensure it is done correctly, and acting as a general resource in the provision of patient care. 11. Performs Charge Nurse duties when assigned. 12. Participates and shares in the development of nursing standards, goals, and objectives at the unit and department level. 13. Supports and participates in nursing and other related research. 14. Supports and participates in the activities of the nursing profession (i.e. British Columbia Oncology Nursing Group). 15. Assumes responsibilities on nursing and other committees as required. 16. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: Education, Training and Experience • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM). • Graduation from an Operating Room post-diploma program preferred, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. • Current practicing registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM). Skills and Abilities • Demonstrated relevant clinical knowledge in providing intra-operative care. • Demonstrated ability to apply clinical knowledge in practice. • Demonstrated communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with patients, the public and all levels of staff both verbally and in writing. • Demonstrated ability to organize patient care and set priorities. • Demonstrated skills in CPR techniques.
