Clinical externs work in collaboration with a unit under direct and/or indirect supervision of a Registered Health Professional in the care environment. UHN is currently accepting applications from Nursing Students for the Extern program. Externs will be hired on contract, during which the Extern will work part time hours to a maximum of full-time hours (37.5 hours per week). The scheduling of these hours will be determined based on unit needs and may include day/evening/night and weekend shifts. Some of the Clinical Extern’s responsibilities include (but are not limited to): Liaising with point of care nurses to identify patient care needs Acting as a resource to the interprofessional team where needed for patient care tasks, supplies, equipment, transportation Assisting with personal hygiene care, patient positioning and transfers Assisting with patient ambulation, toileting and with meals including feeding Assisting with patient and family communication Other duties as assigned to support the care team Qualifications Must be a Nursing Student between 2nd and 4th year of a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) program, or in final year of a Practical Nursing (PN) program Must be available a minimum of 18.75 hours per week, and have a flexible availability Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required Additional Information Why join UHN? The clinical extern works under the supervision of a registered health professional to provide direct patient care, including hygiene, mobility, and feeding assistance. They also act as a resource to the interprofessional team by managing supplies, equipment, and patient communication.

Candidates must be nursing students in their 2nd to 4th year of a BScN/BN program or final year of a PN program. A current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is required, along with the ability to work a minimum of 18.75 hours per week.
